Forced Eviction in Kunir, Pinangsia, West Jakarta

73 families of Kunir neighborhood, Pinangsia, Tamansari, West Jakarta were evicted by local city squad on Wednesday, May 27th 2015 at 7:30 AM. An estimated 500 city squad members and 100 police personnel involved in the demolition. Forced demolition by the district office violates the community agreement with Vice Governor of Jakarta, Djarot Syaiful Hidayat, which shall allow the residents to vacate the land within three days from the date mentioned. Instead, the district office sent district squad that outnumbers the residents that conducts violent and aggressive behavior during the jostling amongst the residents.

As the result, some residents were hit including JRMK coordinator Siti Komariah, with a finger seriously injured she was taken to hospital Sumber Waras. Another JRMK member Isa was almost trampled in the stampede, until helped by Kastowo. Young women in pregnancy and also other women were in shock, and even fainted.

Previously, residents have done partial dismantle of their homes to make space for the 5 meters wide esplanade and greenery next to the Ciliwung river. They also run local waste management. This concept and solution have been submitted to the municipality of West Jakarta. But, the district office insists for a 15 meters river easement and conducts forced demolition, without offering compensation, without provision of information on relocation homes.
